As you wrap up your writing on a current social issue, consider the following:

Who are the people involved in the social issue? Is there a group that has more power? A group that is being oppressed, othered, exploited?

How is the topic typically talked about? In the news, on social media, etc.

Deeper analysis: Institutions involved? Are there certain ideologies that justify how people, the environment, etc are being treated?

Looking for solutions: What are people already doing? Activists? Students? Community members? Organizations?

Is there something else, like a personal experience or creative solution, that you want to offer?

Hey Period 3,

Use today as a writing day for your newspaper. Remember that your newspaper will eventually cover culminating projects 1 and 2. Our focus right now is #2 (on social issues). Our due date for this will be Thursday. Remember to come up with a creative title and change any images on the template you are using!

An assignment will be up on Schoology for you to submit your work as a file. I'd prefer a .pdf!!

See you all tomorrow.

Depending on the topic you selected, watch one of the following videos! Take notes and write a small summary! 2-4 sentences.

Kimberlé Crenshaw's "The urgency of intersectionality."
Reina Gossett or Dean Spade on Queer/Trans history
Ron Finley's "A guerrilla gardener in South Central LA."

Dylan Rodriguez, "It's not police brutality."
Stop telling women to smile.

(Dylan's video might be difficult, so don't feel like you have to try that one!)

Spend the rest of the class researching the social issue you selected! Email me an article of your choice on the issue.
